How Much Should a Contractor Pay for a Website?

Ask five people what a website for a roofing or plumbing company should cost and you’ll get five answers, from a few hundred dollars to well over $10,000. Here’s how to think about it.

Option 1: The cheap one-time build

You can find someone online to build a site for a few hundred dollars. Sometimes that works fine. The risk is what happens after: who updates it, who fixes it when something breaks, and who makes sure it actually brings in calls? Often the answer is nobody.

Option 2: The agency

Agencies can do good work, but they’re usually priced for bigger companies. Expect a large upfront fee or a sizable monthly retainer, sometimes with a long contract. Before you sign, ask exactly what you get each month and how you’ll know it’s working.

Option 3: A monthly plan with one person you can text

This is what I do at WebGuySteve. There’s a $0 setup option (with a 6-month minimum), or $300 setup if you’d rather cancel anytime. Then:

  • Get Found plan, $150/month: your website, hosting, Google Business Profile cleanup, lead alerts and small changes by text.
  • Never Miss a Job plan, $260/month: all of that, plus missed-call text-back, call tracking and a monthly call report.

The question that matters

Don’t ask “what does a website cost?” Ask “what does a missed job cost me?” For most trades, a single repair or replacement job is worth more than a month of any of these plans. Pick the option that makes sure those jobs reach you.
